“What on —” Virginia stopped abruptly just inside the door, probably startled by the overturned settee, then rushed in to find them sitting on the floor. “Are you quite well, Your Grace? I left only minutes ago!”

And Viola was right behind her. “You are — you look hurt!” Selene could practically hear Viola giving their hostess a good hard glare. Viola did not like mysteries.

But Selene still needed far more time to think. “My apologies, ladies, I will be myself directly; just a few more moments with Lady Donnatella, please?”

“Oh no!” “Never say so.” “Terrible plan.” “You ought to stay with us.” “…If you truly must, we will be right outside.” Viola and Virginia were for once united in disagreeing with Selene’s request.

But both ladies left, even as they muttered between themselves, and Selene’s heart felt a little healed by it. They were good friends, truly.

Selene faintly heard them talking to someone. Was that Jonathan, her footman? He sounded ready to rush in. Poor Jonathan. All his hard work, defeated by a dress.

“I cannot tell if this attack was meant for you or to cause problems for me,” her hostess said quickly. “You had better tell the Duke everything, and I must hope that he can forgive me for allowing you to be so hurt in my home.”

“The Duke has no reason to blame others right now,” Selene said darkly. “But was it my old maid, do you think?”

Lady Donnatella hesitated, then said, “I think it was a larger woman than you describe, or even a man, but I could be wrong.”

“Would others not have noticed a man entering this room?”

“When one makes an effort, madame, it is quite possible to appear as either. Trust me.”

Selene frowned. “Who are you?”

Her hostess just took both of her hands gently and helped her up. “My friends call me Tella. Come. Let us repair your hair a bit, then I must let the servants know to tidy up this room. There must be other ladies, too, in dire need of a place to nearly faint.”
